“I need to tell you something,” Caroline said, her voice low but steady. “What is it?” I asked, already sensing it was serious. “I’m asexual,” she said, not looking at me. “It’s not about you… it’s just who I am.” I sat back, the words sinking in. “So that’s why…” I stopped, not sure how to finish. She nodded. “I know you’ve been unhappy. I think you’re going to leave me.” I shook my head slowly. “I don’t know what I’m going to do. I just… didn’t expect this.”
