I stood before the Cassil estate, its grandeur a testament to the debt I could never fully repay. Jack and Maria Cassil had rescued me from the shadows, sponsoring my rebirth into a life of purpose. As I entered, I was greeted with warmth by Jack and Canon, my benefactors. "Merry Christmas, Denis!" Jack said with a smile. "The season greets you well, Sir. Thank you for having me, Ma'am," I replied, bowing slightly to Maria and then Jack. Canon clapped my back, his playful demeanor a stark contrast to the ruthless mafia boss he was. "The Mafia king is here!" Canon exclaimed, his grin infectious. I raised an eyebrow, amused by his antics. Sometimes, I wondered how he balanced his lightheartedness with the darkness of our world. "Missed you, man. How's business?" Canon asked, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Prosperous, thanks to your father's guidance... and fear of my name," I replied, my voice low and even. As I spoke, I noticed Canon's gaze drift past me, towards the stairs. My instincts kicked in, and I followed his line of sight. Footsteps echoed, light and graceful, and a vision appeared at the top of the stairs – Camile Cassil. Raven hair cascaded down her back, and her porcelain skin glowed softly in the warm light. Her eyes, bright as stars, sparkled with warmth... until they met mine. In that moment, the warmth in my eyes dissipated, replaced by a flicker of ice. "Miss Cassil," I said, nodding respectfully, careful to mask my awareness of her beauty. The constant use of 'Miss Cassil' for her, over these years, a reminder of the distance maintained from her. My silent vow remained steadfast: protect her from the shadows that followed me.
