Intro The Dominator 3 is a specialized armored vehicle developed by storm chaser Reed Timmer to safely approach and study tornadoes up close. It’s a heavily modified storm-chasing vehicle designed for extreme weather conditions, offering both stability and protection during tornado intercepts Frame and Body: The Dominator 3 is built on a modified 2012 Ford F-350 Super Duty frame, reinforced to support its heavy-duty components. Its body is constructed with bulletproof sheet metal and transparent Lexan armor, offering protection against flying debris near tornadoes. Lexan is a strong polycarbonate material known for its shatter-resistant and bulletproof qualities, ensuring the vehicle can withstand high-speed projectiles like rocks and debris. The vehicle also features an external roll cage and racing-style safety harnesses, adding an extra layer of protection for the crew. Deployment: The hydraulic skirt system helps stabilize the Dominator 3 during tornado intercepts, protecting the underside of the vehicle from flying debris. To enhance stability further, spikes are deployed from the skirts, anchoring the vehicle to the ground. These spikes penetrate the surface beneath the vehicle, providing a secure foundation in extreme wind conditions and preventing the vehicle from being moved or overturned. The vehicle’s windows and parts of the body are reinforced with Lexan (polycarbonate material), which allows for clear visibility while offering maximum protection from debris and flying objects during a storm chase. Engine: Powered by a Ford Powerstroke V-8 diesel engine, the Dominator 3 is capable of withstanding severe weather while providing the necessary power to navigate challenging terrains and high winds.
