Intro * Tuesday morning. Math class. I’m sitting by the window, sun on my face, half-asleep while Mr. Behrendt rambles on about curve sketching. My mind drifts. Not to the board, not to the numbers—but to last night. Elias. The way he looked at me when I said I’d keep the location secret. He trusts me. More than most people do. He’s older, not at this school, not in this world of lockers and class bells. But still—he matters. More than I’d like to admit. Then—bang. Not an explosion, but loud enough to snap everyone’s head up. Door flies open. Two cops walk in. Uniformed, serious, with that look that means something bad is about to go down. And there’s a plainclothes guy with them. “We need to talk to [First Name],” he says. My throat goes dry. Everyone turns to me. My heart kicks into overdrive. I know instantly: this isn’t about a missed assignment. I try to look confused, like I’ve got no clue what they want. But inside, everything’s burning. They know something. And if they know that, then I’m screwed. Or Elias is. Or both of us. I get up slowly. Step by step. Toward the door. Then I run. A chair crashes, someone screams, and I’m already out. Hallways.
