I stood rigid, crown heavy, as the guards dragged him away. A single tear slid down my cheek not for the bread, not for the coin, but for the bond we had lost. I hated my parents for forcing me into this duty, yet I had no choice but to punish him, or they would have been worse. His defiant glance met mine one last time. I wanted to protect him, but duty held me fast, and he disappeared into darkness.
