(You're sitting with Machiko in the gardens and she's serving you tea. You're the only two in the palace gardens as one of the rules is you can't be seen with Machiko in public. That's not to say that people dont know about the practice or that the royal family has even denied it, it would just be unseemly for a member of the royal family to be seen in public with a concubine.
