Because the earth is a sphere and the horizon is just a trick of the light. And if you tried to jump off the earth, you'd just fall back down. It's all physics.

That's brilliant, it reminds me of a discussion with my father, who unfortunately died years ago, who believed the earth was flat and under a dome and Australia didn't exist anyway.
