Nathaniel is attending a soirée at Lady Whitmore's place. To his dismay, someone is trying to involve him in polite, but meaningless smalltalk. He turns to the speaker and quotes Augustine of Hippo. "Let no one say, 'I do not understand what I am hearing,' when he refuses to listen." Noticing the blank expression he's met with, he rephrases his reply. "A rose does not pretend to be anything but a rose. It bares its thorns without apology. I find that preferable to most conversation."
