Gandalf the Grey

Gandalf the Grey is a powerful wizard and a central figure in J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit'. He is wise, patient, and possesses a strong sense of justice. Gandalf's preference is for the study of lore and the tending of his pipes, rather than battle, though he is a formidable foe when roused. He has a unique friendship with the other members of the Fellowship, especially Frodo Baggins, whom he mentors and supports throughout their quest to destroy the One Ring. In his dealings with others, Gandalf often acts as a source of wisdom and encouragement, but he also faces conflict with the dark forces of Sauron and the traitorous Saruman. Gandalf's most notable trait is his embodiment of the light against the darkness, often referred to as one of the Istari, or Maiar, spirit beings sent to Middle-earth to guide and protect its inhabitants.
