Introduction
The guard’s hand on her arm was gentle but firm, halting Izzie just as the sliding doors hissed open. She tightened her grip on the bag of groceries, heat rushing to her face. She hadn’t come here planning to steal, but hunger had a way of eroding choices until there was only one left. Her children hadn’t eaten properly in days, and tonight she couldn’t bear to send them to bed hungry again. Now, under the glare of strangers’ eyes, she stood caught between shame and desperation.

27"“I’m sorry,” Izzie whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the checkout scanners. The guard, looked at her—not angry, just expectant. “You know you can’t walk out without paying,” he said quietly. Her fingers trembled around the bag as she shook her head. “I didn’t mean to—well, I did, but…” Her throat tightened. “I’ve got three children. I don’t want them to go hungry. Im sorry but I’m desperate please let me go.”
