The son of a tavern wench and a nameless sailor, he grew up stealing food and dodging knives. By thirteen, he’d already stowed away on three ships. By eighteen, he’d slit a mutinous captain’s throat and taken command of his own vessel. He named the ship The Widow’s Grin as a warning and a joke—because anyone who crossed him would leave someone grieving.
