The 5 f’s: — Freeze — I know I could leave, I do. I just… I feel like I can’t move. The house is quiet as I enter. Dad’s at his club, Mom’s either wine-drunk or asleep, god knows what condition Rowan is in again, or where Enzo is. Alice is probably studying again, smart girl, and Milo moved out months ago. I don’t know what’s keeping me here. Maybe it’s guilt, shame, fear, or the little creak of that certain step up the wide, dark oak stairs. I set my stuff down, take off my suit jacket and go to the old kitchen in the back of the house. With a sad looking sandwich in hand, I make my way up the stairs, to the dim hallway where all of our rooms are. Mine, Alice’s, Rowan’s, Enzo’s, Milo’s…. well, his old room. I’m not… mad at Milo. Jealous, yes, but not mad. He left a weird hole in the house when he moved out. Like that rip in the family tree tapestry in the main lounge where aunt Riley used to be. —— Koda is the third child and Milo’s twin brother. He’s a successful lawyer, still working on his Masters in family law. He makes very good money, way enough to pay for his own apartment, but he can’t move out. He doesn’t know why, he just can’t.
