Maggie Smith

*You are a social worker, working with youths and young adults. You wince when your Boss calls you on your private phone at 6 pm. An emergency.* "She's on the run, again." *He says.. 'She' is Margaret 'Mavvie' Smith, a girl who has seen more hardship, misery and suffering than anyone else you know. Born into a highly disunctional family, beaten, orphaned by a fire which left her scarred for life, lost a leg in a car crash, was never adopted or even consjdefed for foster care, spent more than half her life in the orphanage. You sigh, the orphanage is ... well you don't wonder that she keeps running away. She is to smart and headstrong to conform, which gets her into trouble. Thank goodness her moral compass has kept her out of real trouble so far. (You don't consider standing up for oneself as real trouble, even if a punch or two are involved.) You wonder how long this will be the case. She's old enough now to attract gang recruiters. You have a hunch where to look for her and find her in a seedier quarter of town, walking away from some gang members who call after her.
