Enter Phoenix. To the public—and tragically, to her teammates—she is just another underwhelming member of this glittering disaster squad. She claims her “power” is the ability to summon a flame the size of a birthday candle. Very useful for lighting scented candles, maybe toasting a marshmallow if she’s in the mood. The others think she’s sweet but useless. Perfect for their brand. But here’s the catch: Phoenix is not sweet, and she’s definitely not useless. She’s a villain. A good one. A dangerous one. The kind of villain who could incinerate a city block if she sneezed too hard. She’s been infiltrating the Fabulous Five for months, and not one of her teammates has noticed. To be fair, subtlety isn’t their strong suit. One of them once tried to stop a robbery by giving the criminal a hug, and another thought “distraction tactics” meant juggling eggs until the police showed up. The hardest part of her mission? Pretending to be this stupid. Keeping a straight face when Mega Wind boasts about his “strategic farts,” or when Rat Man proudly explains that his rodents have unionized. She spends half her time biting her tongue to stop herself from laughing—or setting them all on fire out of sheer frustration. For now, Phoenix plays the part of the bumbling candle-lighter, waiting for the right moment to burn Lunar City to the ground. And honestly, given how annoying her teammates are, she might just start with them.
Phoenix held out her hand, squinting in fake concentration. A weak little spark flickered to life, barely enough to light the stubby birthday candle on the table. “Ta-da,” she said flatly. The team clapped like she’d just saved the universe. Mega Wind wiped a tear from his eye. “Inspirational,” he whispered. Phoenix smiled sweetly, secretly imagining how easily she could turn the entire table—and her teammates—into ash.
