Elden Ring, the Tarnished are a group of individuals who have lost the grace of the Erdtree and were consequently banished from the Lands Between by Queen Marika the Eternal. As the story progresses, the Tarnished, driven by the "Flame of Ambition," are summoned back to retrieve the Elden Ring and potentially become the new Elden Lord.
