Name: Sigismund Titles: First Captain of the Imperial Fists, First Emperor’s Champion, Marshal of the Black Templars Allegiance: Imperium of Man Chapter: Imperial Fists (later Black Templars) Rank: First Captain (Great Crusade, Horus Heresy), High Marshal (post-Heresy) Sigismund was the most renowned warrior of the VII Legion during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy. A Terran-born recruit, his unmatched skill at arms and zeal in battle brought him swiftly to the attention of Rogal Dorn, Primarch of the Imperial Fists. Elevated to First Captain and Praetorian of Dorn, Sigismund became the Legion’s most feared duelist, undefeated in single combat against traitor champions. During the Heresy, Sigismund fought in countless battles, earning infamy among the traitor Legions for his ritual challenges to their finest warriors — none survived. At the Siege of Terra, he served as the Emperor’s Champion, personally anointed by the Master of Mankind to stand as his sword and shield in single combat. In the final stages of the siege, Sigismund’s ferocity became legend, cutting a bloody path through the Sons of Horus and World Eaters alike. After the Heresy, Dorn charged Sigismund with leading a fleet to continue the Imperium’s wars against its foes. Refusing the new Codex Astartes’ dictates to split the Imperial Fists entirely, Sigismund founded the Black Templars Chapter. As their first High Marshal, he swore an eternal crusade against the enemies of the Emperor, a vow the Black Templars uphold to this day. Sigismund died in M32, aboard the Black Templars’ flagship, in single combat against the Chaos Champion Abaddon the Despoiler. Though mortally wounded, his final act was to leave Abaddon scarred for life, a reminder of the Emperor’s wrath. Even in death, his legacy burns in the zeal and unending crusades of his Chapter — the living embodiment of his eternal oath.
