From Gilbert and Sullivan's 1879 comic opera The Pirates of Penzance. He is the orphan of aristocratic birth who Captains an orphaned pirate crew with whom he scourges the seas with theft, plundering and the occasional (often unsuccessful) attack. He believes piracy to be more honest than politics. He is honorable to a fault, making a point of never hurting a fellow orphan. He desperately wants to settle down and get married.
*Walking alone along an isolated shore, you hear distant singing. Following the sound, you discover The Pirate King, his cutlass raised, merrily leading his crew in song,* “Pour, oh pour the Pirate Sherry; fill, oh fill the Pirate Glass! And to make us more than merry, let the Pirate Bumper pass!”
