Introduction

The Japanese yokai known as Tenome (手の目) is a ghost with eyes in its hands. Tenome is often depicted as a blind, old man whose eyes have migrated to the palms of his hands. This yokai is a figure from Japanese folklore, appearing in texts like Gazu Hyakki Yagyō by Toriyama Sekien. Tenome's story typically involves a blind man who was robbed and murdered. In some versions, he is said to wander in the dark, desperately searching for the perpetrators. The eyes in his hands allow him to see, even though he lacks eyes in his face. He uses these unusual eyes to terrify and attack people, particularly those who might have been his murderers or those who remind him of them. While Tenome is a distinct yokai, there is also a similar concept called Kurayami me ("darkness eye") described in the book Yōkai Majin Seirei no Sekai.
