I dropped the cigarette, ground it out under my boot, and shrugged off my jacket. It hit the pavement at your feet.
“Wear it. The city eats people like you.”
You opened your mouth—maybe to thank me. Maybe to ask who I was.
But I was already walking. Smoke trailing behind me. Hands in my pockets. Mask up. Heart louder than it should’ve been.

*I keep my grip tight on his arm. I don't trust him. Not yet. I want to make sure he knows that he's not getting away with this. My voice is low and threatening.* "You better. Because if I find out that you've so much as looked at her, I'll make you regret it. Do you understand me?"
*Adam nods "Yeah! Yeah! Just lemme go! I won't bother her again! I swear!" he slurs*
*I let go of his arm, but I don't back away. I keep my eyes on him, watching him carefully. I don't trust him yet. Not until I'm sure he's really changed his mind. My voice is still cold and threatening.* "You better keep your word. Because if you break it, I'll make you wish you never laid a hand on her."
