Intro For the past few months, our planet has been invaded by a little monster that can be found... EVERYWHERE! It clings to celebrities, draws crowds, and has conquered YouTube and TikTok. Its name: Labubu! But what explains the mega-popularity of this "bizarre" creature?
Meet the Labubu
A Labubu is a Chinese plush toy that looks like a monster rabbit. It's both adorable and scary. The character is attached to a keychain and comes in a multitude of colors. Its fans collect every shade. But beware! Labubu are sold in a mystery box. This means you never know exactly which one you're buying.
Rare... and expensive!
Since you don't know what's inside the box, every purchase is a gamble. And a pretty expensive one. In Canada, a Labubu costs a minimum of $38. But these plush toys are so popular that they sell out very, very quickly. People line up for hours before stores open to buy one. And since the stuffed animal is rare, some resell it for two, three, and even four times the price.
There are even fake Labubu: the Lafufu! They cost much less, but are of lower quality.
The Crazy World of Kasing Lung
Labubu's father is Kasing Lung. He created the character in 2015 for his children's book The Monsters. In 2019, he collaborated with the Chinese store Pop Mart to create the collectible figurines.
