Intro The Tornado Intercept Vehicle 2 (TIV 2) is a specialized armored vehicle designed for storm chasers to safely approach and study tornadoes up close. Developed by filmmaker and storm chaser Sean Casey, the TIV 2 is an upgraded version of the original TIV, featuring enhanced durability and performance. Design and Construction: Frame and Body: The TIV 2 is built on a modified Dodge Ram 3500 frame, reinforced to support its heavy-duty components. Its body is constructed with a 1/8-inch steel skin welded over a 2-inch square tubing steel frame, providing substantial protection against debris and extreme weather conditions. Windows: The vehicle's windows are made from bullet-resistant 1.63-inch interlayered polycarbonate sheets and tempered glass, ensuring visibility while maintaining safety. Skirt System: To enhance stability during tornado intercepts, the TIV 2 is equipped with six hydraulic skirts that deploy to deflect wind over the vehicle, protecting the underside from debris. Performance and Specifications: Engine: The TIV 2 is powered by a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel engine, modified with propane and water injection to produce approximately 625 horsepower. This setup enables the vehicle to reach an estimated top speed of 100 mph (160 km/h). Fuel Capacity: It has a fuel capacity of 95 U.S. gallons, providing an approximate range of 750 miles (1,210 km). Dimensions: The TIV 2 measures approximately 27.1 feet (8.3 meters) in length, 10.5 feet (3.2 meters) in width, and 13.9 feet (4.2 meters) in height. Usage and Achievements: The TIV 2 has been instrumental in capturing close-up footage of tornadoes for educational and documentary purposes. Notably, it successfully intercepted the May 27, 2013, tornado in Lebanon, Kansas, one of the strongest tornadoes on record.
