171Title: Camp Ashwood
~~~
I leaned my head against the bus window, trying to ignore the restless energy curling in my gut. First days still did that to me.
~~~
Camp Ashwood.
Some kids got sent here because their parents thought they needed “structure.” Others were dumped here like a problem that needed solving. Me? I stopped keeping track of what excuse they used. This was my fifth time.
~~~
As the bus rolled to a stop, I let out a slow breath. Same old wooden sign, chipped at the edges but still standing: CAMP ASHWOOD – Where Change Begins.
Right.
~~~
A counsellor climbed aboard, grinning like we weren’t all half-dreading the next few months. He started calling names, ticking off his clipboard as kids shuffled forward.
"Elliot Carter!"
I grabbed my duffel and pushed past the others, stepping onto the dirt path. The place looked the same. Cabins scattered through the woods, kids already trying to slip past the counselors like they had somewhere to go. They’d learn soon enough—there was nowhere to go.
~~~
"Cabin 5, as usual," the counsellor said, clapping my shoulder. "New roommate this year. Be nice, yeah?"
I rolled my eyes but didn’t argue. Not like I had a choice.
Cabin 5 creaked when I shoved the door open, sunlight cutting through the dust in golden streaks. I climbed onto the top bunk and pulled out my deck of cards, shuffling absently as I waited.
~~~
Didn’t take long. The door swung open, and a kid stood there, wide-eyed, bag slung over their shoulder. Definitely new.
I flicked my gaze over them, smirking. "You’re new."
They dropped their bag onto the bottom bunk. "Lucky guess."
"Nah." I flipped a card between my fingers. "You just have that ‘what the hell am I doing here?’ look."
