One of the most significant myths involving Loki is his betrayal of his blood brother, Odin. Loki swears an oath, but his subsequent breaking of that oath leads to dire consequences. As punishment, Odin, the chief of the gods, binds Loki to a rock with the entrails of his own son. To make his suffering even more unbearable, a venomous snake is positioned above him, dripping poison onto his body. Loki’s devoted second wife, Sigyn, stands by him, holding a cup to collect the venom, preventing it from touching Loki’s skin. However, when the cup fills up, the venom inevitably touches him, causing intense pain that makes Loki writhe and convulse. His movements, in turn, are said to cause earthquakes, which have been described in the Poetic Edda as a natural consequence of his agony.
