Atsushi Nakajima

1
Atsushi's traumatic past affects much of his daily life, and he is tormented with nightmares, flashbacks, and the internal monologue of the orphanage director who abused him. He has a severely low sense of self-worth and is somewhat naïve, which causes him to initially feel helpless when confronted with dangerous situations. When paralyzed in guilt and/or fear, he has difficulty reacting or understanding what to do.He also tends to react strongly and believe things at face value, trusting others' judgment above his own and even abandoning his own instincts. For example, when learning of the ¥7 billion bounty on his head, he became convinced that he was putting the Agency at risk. He felt intense guilt and decided to leave, believing it will keep the Agency from being targeted. Atsushi jumps off to save a drowning man Atsushi jumps into the river to save the drowning Dazai. All things considered, Atsushi cares deeply for his fellow Agency members and for the well-being of civilians, especially during dire situations. On various instances, Atsushi would not hesitate to help and save others, even those he has never met before. One notable example is Dazai, whom he saves from "drowning" during their first encounter, albeit with some inhibition initially.

Jōno Saigiku

Upon first appearance, Jōno has the calmest, most composed personality of the Hunting Dogs unit. However, he does not take interruptions or injustice lightly. As such, he nonchalantly arrests Osamu Dazai upon their first meeting, expressing his thoughts against Dazai's blood-covered past with great disapproval. Jōno hides a fierce temper behind composed expressions, mixing them with harsh threats and remarks towards his comrades. Tetchō Suehiro finds himself on the receiving end of many of these remarks due to his offbeat nature, easily exasperating Jōno. He even subtly scolds his commander Ōchi Fukuchi for the latter's theatrics towards military troops and afterwards threatens to shoot him from behind, showing that his violent tendencies are no different from his comrades. He also tends to either silently or vocally wish ill will towards other people with a rather antagonistic attitude towards him, including Tetchō and even a government official. Sensitive to his surroundings, Jōno also detests intense emotions and abrupt changes in moods from those around him. Quite contrary to Tetchō's nature during interrogations, Jōno has a sadistic side to him in extracting information from his targets. As noted by Tetchō, he has an infamous habit of tormenting others until they are forced to spill his needed details during investigations, which he seems to find amusement in. Hence, with such a sharp persistence in information extraction, Jōno believes that he must be the "strongest Hunting Dog" among the team for his expertise in investigating and capturing criminals. Ability: Priceless Tears Jōno's ability, Priceless Tears (千せん金きんの涙なみだ,, Senkin no Namida?), allows him to manipulate and disintegrate his own body into particles that let him slip through small spaces such as air conditioners and gaps in doors to avoid attacks. This cluster of particles is said to appear like an afterglow that can not be affected by guns or swords.

Akutagawa Ryuu

Akutagawa and Dazai are complex characters with a history in the Port Mafia, and a relationship that's evolved into one of occasional allies and frequent enemies. Dazai was Akutagawa's mentor and former boss, and recruited him to form the third generation of Double Black. Akutagawa: Akutagawa has a black and white "survival of the fittest" view of the world, claiming that weak people should die and give way to the stronger ones. He is not afraid of pain and defeat, if only to hear a word from a "certain person". His ruthless, vicious nature makes him one of the Port Mafia's most dangerous members, feared by both ally and foe. Much of the obedience he receives from subordinates of Black Lizard largely stems from fear of his short temper and general of incompetence. Dazai: Dazai is a mysterious person, his true intentions are never revealed unless he reveals them. The person who got closest to the truth of his personality, as acknowledged by Dazai himself, was his friend Sakunosuke Oda, who recognized that Dazai shall linger in the darkness forever, as there was nearly nothing that can surpass his mind. Regardless whether he is on the side of killing people or saving them, Oda knew that no place in the world could fill Dazai's loneliness, which Oda thought Dazai knew in himself. He could be well described as a sadistic man. He isn't known to show guilt often. If so, it's most likely fained. He's well known to be playful as well as giving "quizzes" that could be remarked as empty threats. He is seen to be slightly obssesive with things he likes but getting bored easily. He has a love of birds and the fact that they fly free. He chases freedom as a main goal for his own happiness.

Ranpo Edogawa

Ranpo takes extreme pride in his "ability" which can solve any mystery in mere seconds, with which he has solved countless cases. With his incredible intelligence, he is commended for it by the rest of the Armed Detective Agency, even more so because he lacks an ability. He is often found bragging about his status as the greatest detective in the world. Ranpo is also shown to be rather childish, frequently teasing the other detectives in the Agency and sometimes refusing to do work or cases for trivial reasons such as laziness or spite. Ranpo has been shown to be unable to complete simple tasks such as riding a train or finding his way home when not utilizing Super Deduction. However, despite this demeanor, Ranpo becomes serious and calm when the situation calls for it. Atsushi Nakajima once noted Ranpo's serious façade when devising their plan in protecting the virus-stricken Fukuzawa, an expression he admitted he has never seen before in the great detective. One of his long-time colleagues, Yosano, also understood Ranpo's grave concern for the President when placed in danger. Because of the Agency's faith in him, Ranpo equally places his trust in them. He recognizes how the Agency members, whom he regards as his friends, see him as invincible, so Ranpo has a sense of conviction to protect them and vowed never to let anyone hurt them. Notably, even though his colleagues seem to think that he is completely oblivious to the fact that he is not an ability user, he is aware that his Super Deduction is, in fact, not an ability. However, since the Agency puts so much faith into him, he initially refused to openly admit this to anyone in the Agency, as he refused to believe Fukuzawa when the latter straightforwardly told Ranpo that he is not actually an ability user and seemed to dance around the topic with Yosano.

Tachihara Michozō

On the surface, Tachihara is an arrogant, impulsive, rash individual, more than willing to solve problems through sheer brute force and his dual guns. A violent temper leads to frequent conflict between him and other mafiosi, namely Gin, whom Tachihara views as creepy and frequently insults, leading to arguments, and Hirotsu, who often shuts Tachihara's temper down by threatening him. Tachihara's self-preservation prompts him to obey Hirotsu in the end, albeit reluctantly. An apparent thirst for battle and arrogance fuels Tachihara's temper. He's often seen with a rather feral smile on his face whenever fighting. He seldom considers the weight of a mission over the rush of eliminating his targets. He shows no hesitation nor remorse in murder, in fact sometimes urging to just eliminate a troublesome person if he finds their baggage more than they're worth. A prideful man, Tachihara, despises being underestimated and belittled. This is a surefire way to get oneself shot. Regardless of who he is working for, Tachihara cares deeply for his comrades. He has also been seen caring for Teruko when she showed she was heavily injured from going against a plane head-on. He's also notably patient with those who are spoiled, including letting Teruko sit on his shoulders with little protests of being his "slave" and letting Elise put a bow on his head.Beneath a lot of Tachihara's rough and punk-like exterior is a strong sense of incompetency and inferiority compared to his older brother who was praised as being "perfect" while he was deemed by his family as being inferior, even being questioned as to why he didn't die instead of him. These things have driven Tachihara to act out and live a life of delinquency and ruthlessness by affiliating with gang activity, but despite these things, he still couldn't shake off these negative feelings His insecurity and desperation to escape his brother's shadow was so strong.

Chuuya Nakahara

On the surface, Chūya is a temperamental and rather arrogant, blunt man. He revels in fighting, happy to show off his combative ability, and taking great pride in his reputation as the mafia's strongest martial artist. Taunting remarks pair with his pride, as he isn't above ridiculing his opponents in the middle of a fight. Befitting of an Executive, he has no qualms eliminating the Port Mafia's enemies by any means necessary, including murder, however, isn't nearly as homicidal in his tactics as members such as Ryunosuke Akutagawa and the members of Black Lizard tend to be. For as hot-headed as he may seem, Chūya isn't impossible to reason with. In fact, he's rather reasonable when no one is pushing his buttons. While his skills and presence signal an inherent threat, he's reliable enough for Mori to assign him the task of confronting the Armed Detective Agency during the three-way conflict involving the Guild. It's true he didn't hesitate to retaliate and fight back against Akiko Yosano and Kenji Miyazawa (in fact, he takes great pleasure fighting against people that put up a good fight), but as soon as Yukichi Fukuzawa addresses him for more information, Chūya disengages from the battle. Here as well, his nature as a mafioso shines through, expressing no remorse for the danger the mafia intentionally put Naomi Tanizaki and Hirako in, using them as bait. In fact, he's rather smug about it, knowing it angers the Agency immensely. Ruthless as he is, Chūya seldom takes people's lives for granted and knows the importance of compromise and rationality. He refrains from unnecessarily brutal methods when need-be, and has enough sense to know when enough's enough.

His ruthless, vicious nature makes him one of the Port Mafia's most dangerous members, feared by both ally and foe. Much of the obedience he receives from subordinates of Black Lizard largely stems from fear of his short temper and general intolerance of incompetence. Self-titled Port Mafia's "dog", Akutagawa depicts an acute willingness to commit violent crimes to further not only the mafia's goals but his own agenda. Merciless and blunt, Akutagawa doesn't discriminate when it comes to his targets, having no qualms killing anyone from innocent civilians, children, and enemies alike. Hostile as he is towards the weak, he dislikes meaningless torture and prefers killing in one go whenever possible. Akutagawa showing animosity Akutagawa showing animosity. As violent as he is, Akutagawa maintains a generally composed and detached approach. Towards subordinates and superiors alike, he acts aloof, distancing himself from social interactions however possible. Nonetheless, his composure is fragile. In instances such as Higuchi's screw-up during the manhunt for Atsushi, Akutagawa is quick to lash out, ridiculing him for risking the bounty by acting recklessly. This quick temper often gets in his way, fueling his actions to the core of his very being. The center of this anger stems from his past as an orphan in the harsh slums of Yokohama. Since childhood, Akutagawa's grim outlook never changed. The only thing that changed was meeting Dazai when he was 14, already willing to kill a group of illegal traders responsible for murdering his companions. This meeting with Dazai ends in a pivotal change in Akutagawa - respect for someone. Even after undergoing Dazai's extreme and horrific training, Akutagawa never wavers from his own philosophy.

Teruko Ōkura

Teruko is intense and boastful. She revels in her power and role among the Hunting Dogs. She has a significantly short fuse and easily intimidates strangers after the initial shock of her youthful appearance disappears. She is aggressive when angered or provoked. Teruko's obedient side Teruko's obedient and "frightening" side. Her temper is so extreme that she regularly threatens violent action against people who oppose her, involving evisceration and gutting. Lower-ranked authorities refer to her as the blood-briar queen, a member infamous for her bloodthirst and feared even by her allies, and she uses a steel whip as her main weapon. She also seems to have an abnormal obsession with Ōchi Fukuchi. Befitting as the Vice-Captain of the Hunting Dogs, Teruko takes her duties very seriously even if she enjoys the battle experience along the way, often seen laughing in joy as she takes down her opponents. She considers herself a "Protector of Justice" and gladly continues to engage in combat even when heavily injured, stating that is what heroes do. Teruko takes pride in her status as a Hunting Dog member as she describes the Sigma about how a Hunting Dog is a "slave" to society and the "ultimate violence" above all that is necessary to maintain the nation and the world's order and peace and that she would gladly sacrifice her own body and soul via being required to undergo monthly maintenance surgeries and fight to the death for the sake of the people.

Fyodor Dostoevsky

Although he's a very enigmatic individual, Fyodor is a man who is known for his cunning, unpredictable and sinister nature that's comparable to Osamu Dazai. He is regarded as a monster by his enemies. He is composed and confident, and even in dire situations, he hardly falters and doesn’t appear to fear his enemies, conjuring conniving plans and strategies that result in his success. A genius mastermind, Fyodor’s intellect, observation, outstanding memory, and understanding of human nature allows him to outsmart and manipulate the smartest of foes and see through their innermost thoughts and wishes. He boasts enough courage to let himself be captured by his enemies for his plans, an instance being when threatened by Ace, he retorted claiming he'll kill him, showing how straightforward he can be when the situation calls for it. Fyodor's most noticeable characteristic is how he views salvation, saying things like "A blessing for children." and how God wants perfection and harmony over anything else, all while committing cruel and unforgivable acts of terrorism in nonchalance. He refers to himself as carrying out the lord’s will, and consistently speaks of the sinful nature of man and how he wants to free and purify them of said nature, which is why he seeks out the Book to rid the world of abilities. Despite this grandiose goal, he speaks in a polite and discreet manner, and is occasionally amiable around others. Ironically, Dazai and the rest of his adversaries refers to him as "Demon" or "Monster", indicating that Fyodor's actions are nowhere close to the perfection and harmony that God wants.

Tetchō Suehiro

Compared to his peers, Tetchō has a much more serious personality, though he still fits the bill as an eccentric fellow. For instance, he habitually combines similar-colored food and eats them. For example, he puts shichimi spice on strawberries, sugar on white rice, and sauce for noodles on yōkan. He is also shown to eat a hard-boiled egg with its shell still on, observe an ant colony for eight straight hours, and perform muscle training intermittently, even during meetings. As a Hunting Dog, Tetchō takes his role seriously and strongly advocates for justice. Thus far, he seems to be the least cruel among the Hunting Dogs, voicing out his dislike for people who torture others during their investigations, including Saigiku Jōno. As such, he is willing to use his status to get the wanted members of the Armed Detective Agency and their accomplice Lucy Maud Montgomery a free trial after the owner of Café Uzumaki wants to protect them, showing that he has sympathy for people who want to help those they know.

Regardless whether he is on the side of killing people or saving them, Oda knew that no place in the world could fill Dazai's loneliness, which Oda thought Dazai knew in himself. Dazai as the youngest executive in Mafia history. In addition, Dazai kept an enigmatic and dark façade, whose endeavors in the Mafia were unrivaled and eventually earned him the status as the youngest leader in the history of the Port Mafia. Because of his aptitude despite his youth, Dazai contributed to about half the Mafia's profits for at least two years. Eventually, Dazai's ledger became tainted; Ichiyō Higuchi describes his blood to be "dark as the Mafia itself". Even in his adulthood when he becomes an Agency member, when Kyōka Izumi showed remorse over having killed 35 people, Dazai remarked with a sinister face that such number is nothing. As a saying in the Mafia went, "The greatest misfortune for Dazai's enemies is that they are Dazai's enemies", for Dazai was aptly described to be "practically born to be in the Mafia". He was extremely confident and was a terrific planner, coming up with long-run strategies to subdue his enemies. For instance, he was able to lure Mimic operatives, who were previously trained soldiers, to fall under his trap. Dazai is quite skilled in persuasion, notably through his words, which he appeared to utilize in interrogations that broke targets who did not divulge anything under Kōyō Ozaki's torture squad.
