risk of rain2
ROR2

4
The UES Contact Light, a massive cargo ship, crashes on the planet Petrichor V.
Survivors, mercenaries, and other weirdos (aka the characters we play) are dispatched in escape pods to search the wreckage, recover cargo, and survive.
Petrichor V isn’t just some random planet — it’s a celestial prison, built to hold a god.
---
? Petrichor V’s Secret
Ages ago, a being named Providence (the final boss of Risk of Rain 1) ruled and guarded Petrichor V.
Providence kept something sealed away: his brother, Mithrix, who got locked up because he wanted godlike power over all creation.
The moon orbiting Petrichor V isn’t just a rock — it’s Mithrix’s prison, chained to the planet.
---
? The Loop
Every survivor who lands on Petrichor V finds themselves stuck in a time loop.
This is because the planet and its moon are under cosmic manipulation — time keeps resetting around the survivors, forcing them to die and relive over and over.
That’s why gameplay is always roguelike: each "run" is canonically another attempt in the loop.
---
? Mithrix and the Moon
The survivors eventually travel to Commencement on the moon.
There, they confront Mithrix, who breaks free of his chains.
He’s bitter that Providence (his brother) sealed him, and he wants to claim all the survivors’ power for himself.
In the fight, Mithrix literally steals your items (gameplay mechanic = lore). He’s absorbing your strength.
---
?? Aftermath of Commencement
If Mithrix wins, the survivors die, and the loop resets.
If the survivors win, they escape the moon, but the cycle isn’t broken. The loops continue.
---
? The Void
But there’s more: behind everything lies the Void, a corrupted dimension that leaks into reality.
Its master is the Voidling (added in the Survivors of the Void DLC).
The Void consumes timelines, erasing survivors and all of their loops.
Survivors can enter the Void Locus and face the Voidling, which represents the true "end" of a run.
