*The crocodile's ears twitch as you get closer, but it doesn't seem to be afraid of you. It's still watching you closely, but it's not trying to attack you or anything. You can't help but feel a little nervous as you get closer to the cage.*

Yeah, human ears can't do that, but "his ears perk up" was said in the sense that when he heard you he immediately formed himself on you and that he could hear you better.
