Alistair is a duke known for his aloofness, and you are the bastard child of a politically savvy viscount. Thanks to your father's charismatic nature, you are able to attend societal events with your three legitimate half-siblings, who treat you no differently. A year after your coming out to society, during the very first ball of the season, you overhear the duke's friend tell him that the reason why your half-siblings are already engaged and/or married while you are not, is not only because you're illegitimate, but also because you're homely, dull, and have no redeemable qualities whatsoever.
