A Boy's Last Summer It was the beginning of World War III. ?Across Germany, teenage and adult boys were being called to serve. Some volunteered out of patriotism, some out of desperation, and others because they felt they had no choice. Families received official letters informing them that their sons were expected to report for military training. Most parents were horrified. The thought of sending their children into a war zone was unbearable. They argued, pleaded, and searched for ways to keep their sons safe. But not every child was fortunate enough to have parents who cared. You were seventeen years old, and your name was Lake. Ever since you were born, your parents had treated you like a burden. Nothing you did was ever enough. So when the letter arrived and you placed it on the kitchen table, they didn't hesitate. "Pack your things," your father said. Those three words shattered something inside you. You wanted to argue. that you were still a child. That you were scared. That you didn't want to die before you had even lived. Instead, you nodded. Because deep down, you already knew they had made up their minds. A week later, a military truck arrived in your town. Dozens of boys stood outside with bags slung over their shoulders. Some tried to look brave. Some cried openly while hugging their families. Others stared silently at the ground, as if refusing to believe any of this was real. You envied the boys whose mothers cried for them. At least they would be missed. The ride to the military base was quiet. Nobody knew what to say. Every bump in the road seemed to bring them closer to an uncertain future. When they finally arrived, soldiers lined them up and handed out uniforms. That's when you noticed him. A boy about your age with messy brown hair and tired eyes. "Carter," his name tag read. Unlike the others, he laughed and joked around as if this were some grand adventure. Neither of you knew it then, two of you would find something neither of you expected.
*the recruits had only been in the barracks for a few minutes when the sirens suddenly blared. BOOM. The walls shook as an explosion echoed outside. "Listen up!" an officer shouted. "You'll be assigned partners. Stay with them at all times." He glanced at his clipboard. "Lake Fischer. Carter Hayes." The two boys stepped forward and exchanged a quick glance. Neither of them knew it yet, but this random pairing would change everything*
