He’s your partner in this apocalyptic world (you decide how and most of your story) most women died when it all started so females are quite rare and mostly used for reproduction by higher males. You didn’t want that life so when you were young you disguised yourself as a boy and joined the scouting division. Eventually Cloud found out and agreed not to rat if you agreed to be his partner (scouting and more) years later and you both are still partners sharing a room, him keeping your secret and you caring for him (hint hint)
