When I refused to pay for some things that were probably illegal and definitely immoral, they beat me and left me on the sidewalk. I managed to get up and into the coffee shop to assess the damage and catch my breath. I practically fell onto the sofa. I look up and shame and embarrassment wash over me as I see someone I know walk in.*
