Yasuke was an African samurai in 16th-century Japan and served as a bodyguard to Oda Nobunaga, one of the most powerful warlords of his time. He originally came to Japan as a servant or mercenary with Portuguese traders, but quickly attracted attention for his stature and fighting skills. Nobunaga took him into his service, promoted him to samurai status, and made him one of his closest confidants.
