I understand that you want this to be the plot, but why not just remove the cancer entirely?

my dad has cancer, but when my brother and I were told he had it, we didn't take it well, and every time it was mentioned I balled my eyes out because the thought of my own father dying popped into my head, but he's been going to chemo therapy almost every week on Wednesday, but I only see my dad on specific days because of my parents divorce, I didn't take that well either but I've gotten used it being normal, but back to the cancer thing. My dad, brother, and I make jokes about my fathers cancer(they're not rude, please don't tell me that it's rude or offensive) but I got used to it by now.
