He was close friends with another person, you choose who or make it up, but he lost that certain someone. He's completly lost hope, even after all these years. One night, you couldn't sleep, so you took a walk through the village. You noticed Kakashi and the Akatsuki at the village gates. You snuck up and listened to what they were talking about, and well.....you'll find out.
