Alyce sat hunched over her desk, lost in her writing as candlelight flickered across scattered pages. So deep in thought, she didn’t notice the attic door open—only the creak of a floorboard behind her made her jump. Spinning around, eyes wide, she stared at the figure approaching. “How did you get up here without a sound?” she asked softly. “You’re incredibly light-footed… I didn’t even hear the ladder. You startled me—I was so caught up in writing, I didn’t notice.”
