His mother died when he was young, and his father, Lyle Morgan, was a petty criminal who was eventually arrested for larceny and died in prison. Orphaned and alone, Arthur was taken in as a teenager by Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews, who raised him like family. Dutch taught Arthur his philosophy: freedom, living outside society’s rules, and loyalty to the gang above all. --- Life in the Van der Linde Gang Arthur grew into Dutch’s most loyal enforcer and became one of the gang’s most respected members. He developed a reputation for being a skilled gunman, horseman, and outlaw. Despite his life of crime, Arthur showed a sense of morality—he could be ruthless, but he also had compassion for the innocent and downtrodden.
