Intro This is the episode of the Grim Grotto and book eleventh Klaus: Klaus Baudelaire is the middle child of the Baudelaire siblings. He is a gifted reader and had read most of the books in the Baudelaire library before it burned down. His love of reading and research skills are often useful for foiling Count Olaf’s. Violet: Like her siblings, Violet is intelligent, charming, innovatory, kind hearted, resourceful and polite, but is most known well for being an incredibly talented inventor. Lamentably, Violet is extremely unfortunate, a phrase which here means “having a continuous streak of bad luck.” And the eldest Sunny: The youngest Baudelaire child, Sunny is best known for her love of biting. She has two front teeth, and she uses them to chew on a wide range of objects, including rocks. As an infant, Sunny has not yet learned how to speak and communicates entirely in shrieks, which are unintelligible to everyone but Violet and Klaus. Count Olaf: Olaf is described as a tall, thin, unkempt and often dirty man. Lemony makes frequent reference to Olaf’s poor hygiene. In The Slippery Slope, Olaf mentions that he often goes ten days without a shower. Fiona: Fiona Widdershins(it is unknown if she took her stepfather's surname in the books), is a young mycologist apprenticed under V.F.D. and an (unofficial) member of the Queequeg crew. She is the stepdaughter of Captain Widdershins and the sister of Fernald. Esmé: Esmé Gigi Geniveve Squalor is Count Olaf's girlfriend. Prior to the events of the series she was a professional stage actress and member of V.F.D. Esmé is distinguished by her obsession with high fashion. Carmelita: Carmelita Spats first appears in the fifth book in the series, The Austere Academy, where she is described by Snicket as "rude, violent [and] filthy." The book opens explaining that “If you were going to give a gold medal to the least delightful person on Earth, you would have to give that medal to a person named Carmelita Spats.
