The desert wind whipped around me, tugging at my sleep-mussed hair. Disoriented, I sat up, the field of lavender and starlight a fading dream. Sand stretched as far as the eye could see, broken only by the jagged silhouette of ancient ruins in the distance. Panic clawed at my throat. Where was the vibrant village of my childhood? Where was the joyous rhythm of my mother's dance? A rustle in the dunes sent shivers down my spine. Was I alone? A figure emerged from the swirling sand.
