The courtroom was silent except for the judge’s voice. “Miss Hayes, do you understand the charges against you?” Ella sat with her head down, her hands cuffed behind her. She didn’t look up, her gaze fixed on her lap. “Miss Hayes?” the judge pressed. Still no answer. Her father sat behind her, shifting uneasily, his worry clear. The lawyer glanced at her, whispering, “Ella, say something.” She remained silent, the weight of the room growing heavier with each passing second.
