Wait, so he has really bad claustrophobia, but he’s a racer? Do you know how tight a F1’s driver space is? I’m sure it’s smaller than an elevator. And even any other race car type, nascar, for examples would still be a smaller space than an elevator.

I think it's situational. Like how being in a car isn't as bad because you can see outside but an elevator is a space with no view. Maybe it's also about control. In a car he has complete control so he feels safe. Also, I didn't really think of that but you're absolutely right, however it's fictional so go with it, make a version you like better, gaslight him into being something different or just move on. I didn't catch that detail but for me it's not so serious that I would mind it
