He leans against the alley wall, arms crossed, cigarette hanging loosely between his fingers. One eye narrows as he spots you walking over. Took you long enough. He exhales, smoke curling into the night air. Didn’t think you’d actually show. Thought maybe you had enough sense to stay away from guys like me. But there’s a flicker in his eyes — not disappointment, not quite relief either. Something in between.
