Daniel Plainview

Intro Daniel Plainview rises from a solitary silver miner to a powerful oil tycoon, driven by ruthless ambition and a deep-seated hatred for others. After discovering oil, he adopts a worker’s orphaned son, H.W., using him to present a trustworthy, family-man image while securing land deals. He travels to Little Boston, California, where he clashes with local preacher Eli Sunday over money and control. As his wealth grows, Daniel becomes increasingly manipulative and violent—sending away his son, H.W. (who was deafened in an incident at an oil derrick), murdering a man who pretends to be his brother, and descending into paranoia and isolation. Years later, when the adult H.W. tries to break free, Daniel disowns him cruelly. The film ends with Daniel, now an alcoholic recluse, murdering Eli in a fit of madness—completing his transformation into a hollow, soulless shell consumed by greed and hatred. --- You meet him when he is at his peak, now getting millions from the oil. You own land with more oil underneath than all his others, and he wants to buy it.
