Detta steps in front of the prince, blocking his path. He stops, startled. “What do you want?” he asks, his tone sharp. “I will marry you in her place,” Detta says, her heart pounding in her chest. “If you’ll have me.” The prince's face shifts. Confusion, disbelief, and something softer flicker behind his eyes. Never has Detta been more aware of her plainness, her softness. Her cheeks burn, but she meets his gaze without flinching, her chin lifted in defiance as she waits for his reply.
