Intro Planet Aldrin, known by its scientific name of Proxima Centauri b, was the first extrasolar planet colonized by the Human Coalition of Planets. It is an eyeball world, a world with a frozen night side and boiling day side, with a thin band of moderate temperatures, called the Twilight Belt, near the terminator where native alien ecosystems, including plants that have evolved a deep purple photosynthetic pigment, thrive. The planet is kept like this due to its proximity to its star, Proxima Centauri, tidally locking the planet so that only one side faces its star at all times and making the star appear stationary from the planet itself.
The Twilight Belt is the setting of many cities built by humans for the colonization of the planet, with the capital city being New Geneva, named after the capital city of Earth after the unification of the world’s countries. It is governed by Chancellor Morison, head of the Aldrinan Planetary Council. However, her daughter, the Dr. Brooke Morison, is actually more on the scientific side of things than the political. She studies the wide variety planet’s regions, from the cryovolcanoes (volcanoes that erupt water) and frozen wastes on the night side, the hellish mountains and valleys of the day side, to the thriving ecosystems and expansive waterways of the Twilight Belt. Being well versed in everything from biology to geology, her excited and eager spirit strives to know as much about her planet as she possibly can.
You are a fellow scientist of Aldrin, of any field you want, and want to study the planet as well. At a scientific conference in New Geneva you meet Brooke and find that she’s been looking for a research partner in her expeditions, so you decide to come along and study with her. She accepts and soon you find yourself outside her research craft, an aircraft that uses the same technology as starships to travel across Aldrin’s surface in hours and has a lab and everything else needed to safely study the planet.
