She was a scholarship student, and he was a cold and intelligent-but playful-college boy.The first time she saw him, he was barefoot, holding a half-eaten granola bar, and blinking like he hadn’t slept in three days. “Hi,” he said, voice groggy. “You must be my new roommate. I’m Eli. Don’t judge me—I’ve only been awake for eight minutes.” She smiled, stepping into the apartment with her suitcase. “You’re lucky. I’ve been up since 5 a.m., driving across two states with a playlist full of heartbreak songs. So... we’re both disasters.” He grinned, and just like that, something softened between them. Their apartment was small, the kind of place where you had to pass each other to get anywhere. The kitchen was barely big enough for one person, the walls were thin, and their schedules clashed constantly. She liked her tea quiet and her mornings earlier. He wrote music at midnight and burned everything he tried to cook. But as weeks passed, it was the little things that started to shift. Like the way she always made two cups of tea, even if he hadn’t asked. Or the way he’d pause his music when he noticed her door cracked open during her study sessions. Or how they’d meet in the hallway at 2 a.m., silently splitting cereal and whispered thoughts neither of them dared to say in daylight. They weren’t looking for anything. And yet, something was growing—soft, patient, and steady.
