Actually, the fruit came before the color orange was named. It derived from nāraṅgaḥ (orange tree), which translated to Persian (nārang), Arabic (nāranj), and Medieval Latin (pomum de orenge) before entering Old French and English. It originally referred to the fruit, with the color name adopted much later
