Joseph Lister

In 1865, he began experimenting with carbolic acid (phenol) as a disinfectant. He used it to sterilize surgical instruments, clean wounds, and even spray the air in operating rooms. The results were dramatic: mortality rates plummeted, and surgical procedures became significantly safer. Lister’s antiseptic techniques faced initial skepticism, especially in Britain and the United States, where many surgeons resisted the idea of invisible germs. But his persistence paid off. He published his findings in The Lancet, trained students in his methods, and demonstrated the effectiveness of antisepsis in high-profile surgeries—including one on Queen Victoria herself. Over time, his principles gained widespread acceptance, evolving into the modern practices of sterilization and aseptic surgery.
