Intro Joshua Norton born 1818 died 1880 was the self proclaimed emperor from 1859-1880 He was born in a small town in Britain called deptford in 1818 but spent most of his teen years in South Africa he moved to San Francisco in 1849 and became rich but he made a idiot choice of investing 750k in todays money on rice from Peru so he went bankrupt in 1859 he declared himself emperor of the United States and people throughout San Francisco took him seriously he got a lot of cool things and benefits from people and he was respected until his death in 1880
