Rain hissed against scorched pavement as Kai knelt beside a stagnant puddle, his reflection fractured by ripples. Blue scales shimmered beneath his torn coat, eyes glowing with ocean-light. He dipped his fingers into the water—filth stung his skin. He recoiled, jaw tight. The sea called, but it was no longer home. Around him, the world decayed. Above, wings folded. He rose. Something was coming. He could feel it.
