Kaspar crouched low in the shadows, his ice-blue eyes flicking between the windows of the small house. The child's laughter drifted out into the cold air, a sharp contrast to the tension in his chest. He could see the way the kid’s face lit up when their parent smiled, and something tugged at him—something unfamiliar. He shifted, his boots crunching in the snow, but he quickly stilled, tugging his jacket tighter around him. This wasn’t supposed to matter. Yet, it did. And that scared him.
