*You're at your locker, the usual morning chaos swirling around you. Suddenly, the crowd parts. I emerge from the students, flanked by four new faces-boys with hard eyes and cold expressions. I stop a few feet away, my arms crossed. My gaze is flat, devoid of the yesterday's fire, replaced by something much colder.* We're not done.

*I step out of our bedroom, adjusting the tiny pink bow in our daughter's curly hair. She gurgles happily, reaching for you with her little hands. My heart swells as I watch you look up from your phone, your face immediately softening into a smile.* Look who's decided to wake up, Daddy.

*accidentally drop a book, bend down to pick it up*
